Terrariums

Leland P. WinninghamApril 3, 2023

Many fascinating creatures are in the world, and I find plants the most amazing. Only some have the space or ability to make mini-ecosystems or gardens in their homes. I have the solution! TERRARIUMS

Terrariums are glass chambers that can be used to grow miniature plants of various varieties. These can be thought of as a miniature version of a jungle or garden. These plants are great for decorating your home. These tiny plants can be selected according to your home’s theme or according to their bright colours. These tiny gardens will make a great addition to any home.

What elements do you need?

A glass container is the first requirement. A transparent container can be either large or small opening. This can be done with an old fish bowl. You can either fully cover the container with a lid or open it partially. Partially open containers are best for plants because they allow air to circulate and retain enough moisture.

Next, you will need to find a substrate that your plants can grow on. These containers don’t have holes so we must create drainage systems to prevent roots from rotting. You can add a layer of small stones or pebbles to the jar, about 2 inches in height. Add potting mix to the jar. Or, make your own mixture by adding soil, clay, compost, or vermicompost in a specific proportion (3 parts sand; 3 parts soil or clay; 1 part compost). This layer should be well-levelled so that the plants can grow.

How do I manage terrariums?

These tiny gardens require very little care and attention. You will need to water them once per week or more if they feel too dry. Use a spray bottle to water them and not flood the system. To prevent the growth of bacteria and fungus, remove any dead or decaying plants as soon as possible. Sometimes plants can grow out of control. Regular pruning is a good way to avoid this. The best thing about this is that you don’t have to fertilize them. We want them to grow slowly.

Keep your mason, pickle, or fish bowls. Instead, make beautiful terrariums out of them!

These miniature plants are beautiful and easy to keep in a glass container. We all have the same question: Which plants are best suited to our mini gardens?

I’ve tried to compile plants based on their beautiful appearances and growing habits. This will help you choose the best combination for your eyes.

Delta Maidenhairfern These ferns thrive in closed environments. These ferns have triangular-shaped arched leaves that are found in a group with many small pinnate foliar leaves. They look like a lovely light-green tree.

Emerald fern This plant will give your terrarium a little more thorniness. This is an evergreen, perennial fern that has thin leaves and a bushy appearance. The fern will only grow quickly if there is enough light. This fern could make a great addition to a terrarium’s small plant category.

Pepperomia (Pepperomia Obtusefolia ) This plant is also known by the name baby rubber. You heard it right! Although it is not the same as the original rubber plant in appearance, it is very similar. It is named for its fleshy, thick, glossy, and large leaves. It stores water in its leaves, and if there is water it will swell up. Otherwise it stays shrivelled. It comes in beautiful dark green colours or with yellow variegated or white leaves.

Chicks and Hens (Sempervivum Tectorum) I highly recommend this succulent to your terrarium. It has vibrant purple and green leaves and also produces star-shaped pink and red flowers on its stalk.

Nerve plant – A creeper can increase the variety in your terrarium. This unique plant is distinguished by its distinctive silver-coloured venation. It has green leaves, but it also has unique silver colours. This plant can be used indoors with yellow or reddish blooms.

Pteris Critica – Commonly known as brake fern. It has variegated, green-colored leaves that are striped at the edges. The middle is light yellowish to cream. Although it doesn’t look typical, this indoor plant is extremely popular.

Helxine soleirolii This succulent is great for adding to your collection. It is a perennial, so it can live for many years. The creepy appearance and small leaves give it a mat-like appearance. It can even blossom with bright pinkish flowers.

Strawberry Begonia These plants are eye-catching because of their red-colored, hairy and coloured leaves. They will form a clump in the container, and spread easily as creepers. It will quickly grow and you can even let it hang from your terrarium for a new look.

Take care of your terrarium.

The requirements of all the plants mentioned above are almost identical. They need high humidity which can be easily found in a terrarium. These plants should not be watered by flooding. Instead, use a sprayer and mister to water them. They all need low- and indirect light. This helps to control their growth. Because glass magnifies light, it can cause damage to tiny plants. Allow fresh air to circulate through your terrarium once per week if it is closed. Use a damp sponge or cloth to clean the surfaces. To avoid mold formation, don’t overload the container.

These are the little things that will make your plants thrive. You will feel a lot of joy when you look at these plants.
